Every cycle the rumor mill runs faster than the release notes. Here is what the AAMC actually changed for the 2027 season, from their own announcement, with the so-what attached.
1. Letters of recommendation move to the Letter Writer Portal
ERAS now accepts letters through the AAMC Letter Writer Portal, one centralized system for submitting and managing letters. The AAMC's stated goal is a single streamlined system that reduces administrative burden for letter writers. What it means for you: your letter writers interact with a new system this year. Send your requests early, include the portal in your ask, and do not assume a writer who "knows ERAS" from past cycles knows the new flow.
2. The Publications section is now Scholarly Work, and the rules changed
The old Publications section has been redesigned and renamed Scholarly Work, with a broader view of what counts. Three mechanics matter: there is no limit on total entries, you can mark up to three entries as Most Meaningful, and you can group related work into Scholarly Collections and preview your entries the way programs may see them. What it means for you: the three Most Meaningful slots are the section now. Choose the three with a story you can tell in an interview, not the three with the most impressive journal names.
3. Three specialties get specialty-designed evaluation letters
The AAMC is working with Urology, Dermatology, and Plastic Surgery (Integrated) to integrate new letter of evaluation and recommendation formats, designed to support more consistent evaluation practices across programs. What it means for you: if you are applying to one of these three, your letter writers may be evaluating you on a structured specialty form, not free prose. Brief them on what the form asks.
4. The ERAS statistics dashboards were rebuilt
The AAMC ERAS Statistics webpage now runs on interactive dashboards: cross-application data, applicant and program metrics, signal and interview data, with specialty-specific views, updated monthly through the season. What it means for you: free primary data for building a realistic program list. Before you pay anyone for "match data," check what the AAMC already publishes.
5. USMLE transcripts route through FSMB
USMLE transcript processing for ERAS moves to the FSMB starting June 2026. Transcript requests and payment now go through FSMB's USMLE portal. What it means for you: mostly nothing you control, but it is one more system handoff in the chain, and one more reason document buffers beat deadline heroics.
And what did not change: program signals are still assigned and sent at the time of application, the number varies by specialty, and two pilots continue (program signal explanations and specialty-specific essay questions).
