On September 2 at 9 a.m. ET, ERAS opens and applicants can begin submitting. Most of the class of 2027 will treat that morning like a starting gun. Here is why that instinct is wrong, and what the smart version of September looks like.
The deadlines that matter
September 2, 9 a.m. ET: applicants can begin submitting MyERAS applications to programs (source 4).
September 15, 12 p.m. ET: NRMP registration opens for the 2027 Main Match. Standard registration runs through January 29 (source 1).
September 23: programs begin reviewing applications, and MSPEs release the same day. Before this date, programs cannot see your application at all (sources 4 and 5).
IMG note: ECFMG says MSPEs and medical school transcripts should be uploaded no later than September 11 so they are transmitted to programs when review opens (source 5).
One thing, decoded: the September 2 trap
Here is the mechanic almost nobody explains: programs see nothing until September 23. An application submitted September 2 and one submitted September 20 arrive in the same pile, on the same morning, looking identical. Day-one submission buys you zero review-order advantage.
What does differ is quality at the moment the pile opens. The three quiet weeks are your last window to fix the things that actually move interview decisions: your program list, your signal allocation, and whether every experience entry reads like a human wrote it.
The honest priority order for September 2 through 22: build the program list on real data, not vibes. Spend signals like the scarce currency they are. Submit when the list is right, any day before roughly September 20. Then stop touching it.
One move before next Wednesday
Draft your signal allocation on paper. For each signal, write one sentence on why that program plausibly interviews someone with your profile. If the sentence is about loving their city, it is not a signal, it is a lottery ticket. Your school’s advising office has last cycle’s outcomes. Use them.
