Dear Applicant,
ERAS submission opens this morning at 9 a.m. Eastern. Somewhere right now, someone is refreshing the page like it is a concert presale. Here is the thing that should lower your heart rate: programs cannot open a single application until September 23.
Submitting first buys you nothing. Programs review nothing for three weeks. That gap is not dead time. It is the play.
The whole play, week by week
This week (September 2 to 7): the list, then the signals. Your program list decides more than any sentence you will polish this month. For every signal, write the one-sentence test: "This program plausibly interviews someone with my scores, my school, my geography, and my story because ___." If the sentence is about loving their city, that is a lottery ticket, not a signal. The full logic: https://dearapplicant.beehiiv.com/p/program-signals-explained-in-plain-english
September 8 to 12: documents. IMG applicants: ECFMG says MSPEs and medical school transcripts should be uploaded no later than September 11, so they are transmitted when review opens. Everyone else: one short email to your dean's office asking two things: how do I review my MSPE before release, and how do I contribute to my Noteworthy Characteristics. Why that email matters: https://dearapplicant.beehiiv.com/p/the-mspe-explained-the-file-programs-read-before-they-meet-you
September 15: registration day. NRMP Match registration opens at noon Eastern. It takes ten minutes. Do it that week and stop carrying the deadline in your head; standard registration closes January 29.
September 15 to 22: submit once, calmly. Then build your interview tracker before the first invitation lands, not after the fifth: https://dearapplicant.beehiiv.com/p/the-interview-tracker-five-columns-that-beat-panic
One decoded number
A peer-reviewed study co-authored by AAMC researchers found that sending a signal raised the chance of an interview invitation in all three specialties it examined: dermatology, general surgery, and internal medicine. In dermatology, signaled applications had a median interview probability of 0.38 against 0.06 for unsignaled ones. Signals are not decoration. Spend them like money.
This week's one move
Write your signal sentences tonight. All of them, one honest sentence each. The ones you cannot finish are telling you something.
Reply to this email any time. Replies land in a real inbox and get read.
Alex
